It is primarily used for anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The use of hydroxyzine is also FDA-approved for allergic skin reactions and is used as a sedative prior to general anesthesia. That being said, some physicians do prescribe hydroxyzine off-label for management of insomnia; in these instances, 25 mg to 100 mg at night is the usual dosage.
